Preparation for landing
We continue flying this course until we are about 50 nautical miles from VOR. Then we switch the autopilot back to NAV mode. Approximately 33 nautical miles from VLM VOR, we are given landing instructions. In our case, the dispatcher says that we are 69 nautical miles east of the airport, we should turn right onto course 305 and wait for the ILS approach vectors on runway 31.
Closing in Prague.
Now we can choose:
1 - Confirmation of the specified approach;
2 - Changing the runway;
3 - Change the type of approach, e.g. visual approach.
We select our assigned approach and turn right onto course 305. After a while, we are ordered to descend to an altitude of 4,000 feet.
We set the autopilot ALT to 4000 without changing the vertical speed. During the descent, it is necessary to remember to reduce traction in order to avoid too high a speed. When we cross an altitude of 10,000 feet, we turn on the taxiing and landing lights, and set the altimeter to the local pressure of QNH - in our case, it's 1021 gPa, or 30.15 inches of mercury.
In the meantime, we can take a look at the airport layout. The ILS frequency for RUNWAY 31 is 109,500 and the runway heading is 305 degrees.
Map of Prague Ruzine airport.
Soon we were instructed to change the frequency to 124.675 and contact Kbely Approach. The new station redirects us to course 215.
Since we need to be directed for the last approach to RUNWAY 31, we can switch the NAV1 radio to the ILS frequency (109.50) and set a new course to 305.
When we are about 19 miles from the airport, we receive further instructions to turn right by 275 degrees, descend and maintain an altitude of 4,000 feet (by now we should have reached this altitude) and permission to land on ILS from runway 31 while maintaining 4,000 feet until we set course radio beacon (RUNWAY 31 radial). Now you need to contact the Ruzinskaya tower on the frequency 119.700.
Please note that an approach permit does not mean a landing permit!
Permission to land.
As you can see in the picture above, the sections of the arrow of the course do not form a solid line. The middle part is moved to the left, which means that our aircraft is located to the right of the directional beacon. We must continue flying on course 275 so that the arrow of the course is steady.
