Overview of the friv game The Survivalists - Train the Monkey

If you're suddenly stranded on an unfamiliar tropical island and you're completely unaccustomed to life outside of society, don't despair. It is quite possible that the local forests are inhabited by wild monkeys, with whom you can not only establish contact, but also cluster a whole tribe. We tell you how - in the review of The Survivalists by Friv2Online.

In The Survivalists, players will find themselves on one of the unknown islands of an archipelago lost in the ocean. Instead of preambles - partial memory loss: the character knows his name, but does not remember how he got here. And as the main driving mechanism of the story - an ordinary desire to survive.

Very soon you will realize that these islands are not uninhabited. Long before you arrived, the archipelago had been exploited by wild tribes of half-orcs, there are restless dead people hanging around, the local jungle is inhabited by small friv game and even large herbivores, and later the developers plan to add predators to the friv game.

The islands are dotted with wrecks of ships and aircraft from different eras. You may come across the well-preserved wreck of a 16th century galleon, and in a nearby gorge you may find a crashed plane from the Great Wars and even find records of crew members, explorers and travelers whose journey ended here.

In addition, the beaches are literally dotted with messages in bottles. Some of them contain important survival tips, while others hide treasure maps with the exact location of the place where you should walk with a shovel. The collected information is stored in a special section of the friv game menu.

The main companions of your character will be local monkeys, which are surprisingly easy to contact. You will have to bait some of them with tasty treats, while others will have to be rescued from the cages where the unfortunate primates were put by the local savages. The skeleton of the game is built around the interaction with these intelligent creatures.

Unconditionally loyal to you creatures try to please the hero in every possible way, follow him everywhere and watch his actions. This is how their learning process takes place - if you show the primate a simple algorithm by example, he will memorize it and will repeat it endlessly.

The options for action are actually not so many. You can teach the monkey to carry things to a certain place, extract useful resources, manufacture something on special machines, build new structures or fight.

In order for the primate to participate in battle, you will have to give him a weapon, and for construction and production you will need a special hammer. Each of your wards gradually learns to do the assigned work better.

For example, a primate that used to carry one item at a time will eventually learn to take a bunch of items at once.

From these simple and straightforward mechanics derive the bulk of The Survivalists' strengths and weaknesses. It is planned that you will connect monkeys to most of the processes, because otherwise you will have to fight groups of enemies alone and spend a lot of time on crafting.

The construction of a camp may look like this: one monkey chops trees, another mines rocks, the third carries the loot to chests, the fourth takes everything you need from the chests and brings it to the workbench or smelter, where the fifth works on the production of material, which the sixth will give to the seventh - responsible for the construction.

Meanwhile, you travel around the islands in the company of several other combat companions armed with bows or spears, fighting aggressive creatures, exploring caves, descending into treasure vaults for valuable loot or exploring dangerous labyrinths in search of gold, valuable rewards and keys to salvation - to escape from the islands, you will need to repair the ship.

Unfortunately, most of the game mechanics are not smooth enough: monkeys often forget what they were doing, and you have to train them again every time; if you want to build something far away from the camp, you can't just bring a builder with you - he will lose his skills on the way.

In addition, the camp is periodically attacked by enemies, as in Don't Starve, but there's no counter to prepare for a raid. You may be too far away to make it in time to save property and wards. You can't leave the battle monkeys to defend the settlement - they always follow you.

I didn't really like the fact that the items in the friv game and the icons in the menu are devoid of any descriptions. A mysterious merchant with a rich assortment of items shuttles between islands in a balloon, but it's not always clear what some items are for, what function they perform.

But the process of crafting such deprivations do not impinge in the slightest. There are not too many recipes here, but everything you need is already present, new ones are opened as they are made available, and the purpose of most of them is quite transparent. Particularly complex structures are assembled modularly from simpler things, for which, again, very useful domesticated primates.

The Survivalists can be played in co-op or by joining a game specifically designed for unfamiliar guests. Users will even be able to transport five of their favorite monkeys to an online world. The community isn't too big yet, but a friv game or two can always be found.

Survivalists is an enjoyable game, and the visuals and music are pretty good. The two main problems with The Survivalists right now are the underdeveloped mechanics of managing the monkey tribe and some lack of content.

Most recipes are unlocked very quickly and after closing the production chain, forming a stable combat team, the friv game leaves users alone with routine chores and minimal challenge - resources are plentiful, food doesn't spoil and so on.

The developers have published a rich roadmap for the near future and I have no reason to distrust Team 17 in this regard. In principle, almost all cool survivalist games of our time have gone this way, so The Survivalists with its charming world, multiplayer and wonderful monkeys shouldn't have any problems either.
